The kitchen is never complete with a cutting board. It is in fact the backbone of a well-running kitchen. While there are several types of cutting board based on the materials they are made of, wooden cutting boards are still the most preferred – even passing them down from generation to generation.

The wooden boards are solid and steady, gripping the knife as securely as possible whether you dice an onion or cut into a thick-skinned vegetable. In truth, wood is moderately soft, so it maintains the sharpness of your knives when compared to other surfaces of cutting boards. What’s more, the wooden cutting boards look beautiful as rustic serving dishes.

Like any workhorse in your kitchen, the wooden board that you own deserves respect, especially when it comes to cleaning them. You need to properly take care of the cutting board, so it doesn’t turn smelly. In some cases, they can become a moldy mess if you don’t clean them correctly.

The good news is the right way to clean these wooden cutting boards is actually really easy and simple. What’s even better is that deep cleaning the board only requires two everyday ingredients, which can prolong the life of the ever-useful cutting board.

Two-Ingredient Cutting Board Deep Cleaning Process

To clean your cutting board, you only need these two important ingredients:

  • One lemon
  • Coarse sea salt

With those two ready, have the following prepared as well:

  • Clean cloth (you can also use a sponge)
  • Warm water

You can also add oil and wax, which can help condition the cutting board. These two ingredients aren’t required, but they can make the deep cleaning process even better. So here’s what you’re going to do:

1. Make sure that the cutting board is dry. You can wipe the board with a clean cloth or a sponge.

2. Now, cut the lemon in half. You don’t need fresh lemon. You can even use old lemons or peels, which you’ll have in your kitchen especially if you often work with these citrus fruits.

3. Scrub the board with the lemon and add the abrasive salt on the surface of the cutting board.

4. Finally, after giving a good scrub, wipe the salt and the lemon off using a clean cloth.

Lemons have always been used to deodorize and even kill bacteria for several decades. Because of their acidity, lemons, along with salt, can even remove stains.
