Having greasy hair is one of the most frustrating hair problems that exist, especially when you know your hair isn’t dirty at all. Greasy or oily hair can make you look filthy and is even worse if you have lighter hair color.

This problem is not only in people who have unclean hair, but also those who produce more sebum than normal. Too much secretion of sebum can lead to even tougher problems, such as itchy scalp, scalp acne, and dandruff. Worse, having oily hair puts you at risk for hair thinning.

Thankfully, you don’t have to shell out a lot of money to get rid of your oily hair problem. Here are some natural remedies you can try to take away that dingy look and get back your hair’s natural shine and luster:

1. Eat healthy.

This may be surprising, but what you eat can affect your hair’s health and appearance. Make sure you eat a balanced diet, especially if you’re so into fat and carbohydrates. These two nutrients are needed by the body, but too much of them can lead to increased sebum production.

2. Shampoo your hair.

You probably heard that showering and using shampoos aren’t recommended if you want healthy hair. While this is true, you need to wash and shampoo more if you have greasy hair. Shampooing will help collect the dirt and oil that have accumulated in your hair. Shower daily or every other day and rinse shampoo well to decrease oiliness.

3. Go natural with apple cider vinegar.

If you don’t like the idea of shampooing your hair daily, you can use this alternative. Apple cider vinegar can help control malassezia, which is a naturally occurring fungus only our scalp. When it goes out of control, the scalp becomes irritated and oily, causing dandruff as well. In a cup of water, add two to three tablespoons of ACV and apply on your hair. Do this two to three times a week.

4. Use some more natural remedies.

If you don’t like apple cider vinegar, there are a lot of other choices for you, which include:

  • A cup of mild shampoo + a tablespoon of lemon juice + a teaspoon of aloe vera gel and refrigerate. Use the mixture daily.
  • One cup of water + juice from one lemon. Apply to hair after shampooing.
  • A glass of tea and apply onto hair before shampooing.

When you use a shampoo, make sure that you don’t go for those with harsh chemicals. If you use conditioners, be careful with them because they can add even more oils to your hair.
